Disappointing dinner at Sons & Daughters, Union Square, SF.

Trinh and I had both been wanting to try Sons & Daughters for awhile now. I hadn't really heard anything about it, but had been by a couple of times. We decided to go after attempting to hit up the First Thursday Art Walk at 49 Geary--most of the galleries were closed because of Labor Day. :(

Back to S&D--what a darling space! I really love what they've done with it.. Sadly, the space is a lot cuter than the food is good. :(

The menu looked great though.

Love this water jug! I think it's great to leave a nice thing of water on the table--I realize it doesn't work for every table setting, but there's really nothing worse than having to wait for water!

Housemade sweet roll with black salt. The bread was soft and lovely. I loved the salt, but could have used a little more salt with the butter.

Amuse Bouche: cucumber something with a caviared something else! Hah! I never quite catch what the amuse is! S&D's big thing is caviaring things and making these cool little balls! It's neat and fun. This amuse wasn't the most flavorful, but had a nice, cool taste.

Sweetbreads Lobster salad Garbanzo bean Baby greens Dijon 18

This was just okay. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting. The dijon was foamed, which took away from the sharp flavor you think of when you hear "dijon". I really didn't taste any dijon at all, actually.

Squab breast Confit leg Chanterelle mushrooms Jus 22

The squab was cooked nicely, but the cuts were odd, difficult to eat, and not that flavorful. the mushrooms were nice, but, overall, the plate was lacking flavor and substance.

The sweet amuse bouche. This was nice. This and the bread were probably the best parts of the meal.

Needless to say, I was disappointed with Sons & Daughters. It's such a great space and Union Square has desperately needed such a restaurant, but the food just wasn't there. That all said, I am glad I tried it! :)

Drinks and late dinner at Gitane, Financial District, SF.

I took Richard to Gitane for drinks and a late bite after Patton Oswalt at Cobb's Comedy Club. I love this bar.

Coup Glacee - riesling ice wine, Pimm's No. 1, sliced cucumber, strawberry, ginger beer, mint 12

I like rieslings and I love Pimm's, but I don't love cucumber. Normally with Pimm's the cucumber is fine, but it was too strong for me in this particular drink. It might have had something to do with the strong flavor of ginger beer, too.

Padrons - fried Spanish peppers, smoked sea salt 6
Fesol - butter beans, pork belly, picada 8

Both very quite nice. Super tender beans, yummy peppers although the salt could have been a bit more even throughout.

Caille - Roasted Tolenas farm quail, chorizo herb stuffing, sweet corn, potato galette 22

Once again, the quail! I loved it when I had it and recommended it to Richard. He loved it, of course and he's not easy to please! The crispy potatoes and the corn are just awesome. And the chorizo stuffing packs a big punch of flavor into the lovely quail. Mmmm!

Dine About Town: Campton Place, Union Square, SF.

Beautiful. I really liked the space and the service was great, too. Campton Place is one of the better deals with Dine About Town. Some of the restaurants you could go to normally and order a prix-fixe for less than $35.. Three girlfriends and I decided to dress up and go for a classy night on the town! :)

Amuse bouche tartare. Could have used more flavor.

Organic Greens, Root Vegetables, Aged Cow’s Milk Cheese, Fennel & Lemon

Emulsion

Kat said this was very nice. Good cheese.

Roasted Carrot Soup with Fine Herbs &Hazelnut

Unreal. My mouth is salivating looking at this right now and remember just how good it tasted!

Slow Cooked Flat Iron Steak with Truffled Yukon, Savoy Spinach & Veal Jus

Very nice. Amazingly smooth purred potatoes, nicely cooked steak with great sauce.

Lemon Tart, Meringue & Raspberry

Chocolate Parfait, Vanilla Cream, & Almond Praline

Mmmmm! Perfect finish. Chocolate mouse is always hit and miss for me--I don't like when it's too light, but this had the perfect density and texture.

Overall, Campton Place is one of the best Dine About Town's I've experienced! (The other favorites were Supperclub and Luella.) I'd certainly go back. :)

Lunch at Moxie, Downtown, Spokane, WA.

Grilled Kobe Beef Burger $10 Truffle Butter, Blue Cheese or Cheddar Cheese, Grilled Portobello Mushroom, Apple Smoked Bacon, Drizzled with Demi-Glace.

It was between this and what I always get at Moxie. I decided to stay safe and go with my favorite meal, but made Caitie get the burger! Jenni got it, too. :) And it was waay good. I always love their fries and aioli.

Wok Seared Stir Fry with Orange Spice Sauce, Served with Coconut Jasmine Rice Choice of Flat Iron Steak $10 Ahi Tuna $10 Chicken $9 Duck $12 Tofu and Eggplant $8 Prawns $12

This is what I always get! I first time I went to Moxie, I was still a vegetarian so I got it with tofu. I loved it so much that I've gotten it with tofu every time since, but now since I'm obsessed with succulent duck, I decided to try the duck! Sadly, it was not so succulent. Still very good, but I should have gone with the burger! ;)

Moxie remains one of my favorite restaurants in Spokane. :)
