Vietnamese sandwiches from Dinosaurs, Castro, SF.

Hah! I love that the guy at Dinosaurs was dressed as a dino and was able to make our sandwiches in costume! ;)

1/3 meatball and 1/3 chicken. I didn't like these that much. The fillings were okay, but weren't exactly Vietnamese style. Also, the bread was too hard. Not a disgusting sandwich or anything, but I really prefer the Vietnamese sandwich shops in the Tenderloin.

Vietnamese cold noodle salad from Turtle Tower, Tenderloin, SF.

Vietnamese cold noodle salad. The meat--pork and meatballs--was very good, but the sauce was only okay. I've only ever had this dish in a bowl, usually with some imperial rolls as well, but Turtle Tower serves it on a plate. I definitely prefer the bowl, as it is easier to eat, but the meat in this dish was really nice.

Jessica's Bachelorette Part 1: Vietnamese at Bodega Bistro, SF.

The bachelorette crew road tripped up to SF from LA! I was excited to meet up with them and take them around a little! They wanted Vietnamese so I thought we'd try Bodega Bistro...

Vietnamese crepe. Yummy, but not the best Vietnamese crepe I've had.

Vermicelli noodle salad with pork and imperial rolls! This is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. I could eat this every day! This once had great, flavorful pork and nice imperial rolls, BUT they didn't have enough imperial roll. Also, they only gave fish sauce with this. I decided to use the sauce from the Vietnamese crepe dish with this and it was lovely.

Shaking beef. Definitely not my favorite shaking beef.

The bachelorette gang! Woohoo!!

The service here was pretty slow, and the prices were a little bit high, but the dirty little secret here is to order off the lunch menu, always! It'll definitely bring down your cost. ;) I shared the above three meals with two girls. Paying for those + tax & tip was $13, and for SO much food!

Lee's Sandwiches, Little Saigon, SF.

This was a Vietnamese sandwich on a croissant! Tres fusion. ;) Pat got this for me because I was starving. Yums.

Pho Au Sen, Oakland, CA.

My amazing vermicelli noodles with imperial rolls! This is my favorite Vietnamese dish and the one here was HUGE! The biggest portion I think I've ever been served, but the sauce wasn't the best I've had. The rolls were a generous portion and very tasty though. I was super happy with this dish and had leftovers--yay!

Meatball pho. Again, very generous with the meat! The broth here is beef based and they used thinner noodles for their pho.

Greasy Chinese Vietnamese at Tu Lan, SoMa, SF.

Photo from ji k on Yelp.

What we ordered:
#20. Mi Xao Don - Shrimp, Pork, Chicken
#39. Veg. & Crispy Noodle, Bo Luc Lac - Beef Cubes VN Style.

I didn't get a shot of the food because I didn't have my camera, but this place is a gem!! A gem, I say!!! Haha. It's definitely a hole-in-the-wall, but I love it so.

#39. Oh my goodness!! It was AMAZING. I'm craving it right now as I write this. Haha. It's not really like shaking beef because it has this sauce, but the sauce is oh so good!

Vietnamese from Anh Hong, Tenderloin, SF.

Vietnamese iced coffee. This and Thai iced tea are two of my favorite drinks. Why they don't have a version of each at Starbucks (or any other chain/local cafe), I have no clue. This was all I wanted to have because my stomach has been acting up again, but they made us order a plate per person! Not polite, but soo Asian of them! Haha.

I got the beef salad, because it was one of the only salad options. I only had a few bites, but it was pretty good. Definitely huge though. Would have been good to share with 5-6 people.

D got wraps, like always. ;)

Beeeeeef! I had one because I was feeling daring and then I paid for it later when my stomach punched at me from inside. :(

Sick day: Flowers and pho.

I'm convinced I have the worst case of food poisoning ever. It's really horrible and I never want to experience this again! This made me feel better though.. :) One of my best friends, Pat, was sooo sweet and brought me these beautiful flowers and some chicken noodle soup (Asian style! Haha). Aren't the flowers so bright and cheery? I love them!

Pho to go from Turtle Tower, of course. :)

Mmmmm.. I could only eat 1/4 of it, but it was really perfect for my condition. I'll have more tomorrow. :) Thanks so much, Pat! You're the best.

My take on Vietnamese imperial roll cold noodle salad.

Soba noodles. Not quite vermicelli, but still, it works! ;)

So not quite imperial rolls either, but i went for some chicken. Haha! Hey--you've gotta improvise. ;) So here are the noodles, carrots, bean sprouts, mint, cilantro and chicken. Oh, and the sauce of course: fish sauce, lime juice, garlic, water, rice vinegar, sugar, red pepper flakes.

This was really yummy! :) I'm going to make my own imperial rolls soon though and then remake this dish. Yay.

Awesome Vietnamese from Vietnam Too, Tenderloin, SF.

My classic--vermicelli noodles with imperial rolls. The imperial rolls here were huge! They were awesome, but sliced too thickly! The noodles were cooked perfectly, the sauce was just right and I was very happy with this meal! :) My only other complaint though would be that there was no cilantro!!?? I was shocked and I loooove cilantro so I was pretty disappointed by that. Strange for a Vietnamese place, but maybe they ran out?? Hmm..

The special make-your-own wrap meal. This was very good and came with nice wrap paper, tons of fresh veggies and a three different sauces! Again though--no cilantro to be found! :(

This is definitely one of the best Vietnamese meals I've had in SF.

Big Eat SF 2010 Dinner Party Part 1

I'm not really sure where this photo is from, but maybe the cheeseburger is from Fish & Farm? I snagged it from the Facebook invite for my friend Scott's oh so fabulous 2010 7x7 Big Eat List dinner party! Such a great idea. :)

Here is what was on the menu:
  • Papaya Salad ("Somtum") with Crab from Sai Jai Thai: Eh. This is a love or hate thing and I just feel indifferent toward it. It wasn't a big hit at the party either.
  • Pho Ga Chicken Soup from Turtle Tower: Delicious. Best pho ever.
  • Dry Fried Chicken Wings from San Tung: Yummy.
  • Nick's Crispy Baja Fish Tacos from Underdogs: Yummy.
  • Niman Ranch Cheeseburger with Special Sauce from Fish and Farm: Delicious. I didn't love the pickles, but other than that this burger rocked.
  • Roast Pork Sandwich from Saigon Sandwich: Yummy. I don't think there's anything that makes Saigon Sandwich stand out other Vietnamese sandwiches though.
  • Apple Fritters from Bob's Donuts and Pastry Shop: Delicious. Must have warm--makes all the difference.
  • Ube Ice Cream from Mitchell's: Eh. I like Mitchell's texture, etc, but I don't know why this flavor is on the list. It just doesn't have any flavor!? I would take vanilla over this, and I don't like vanilla ice cream because it's usually too plain!
  • Chips & Salsa from Papalote: Delicious. The salsa is really something else!

Quick Vietnamese sandwich break, Baguette Express, Tenderloin, SF.

Steamed pork Vietnamese sandwich.

After A Serious Man and The Hurt Locker we got an hour break. Of course, I was hungry, so went out and shared a sandwich. The steamed pork wasn't my favorite though--not flavorful enough for me. I love the bread they use here. I asked about it and they said they sell it for $0.50/baguette! I'll definitely take them up on that for some tasty sandwiches! :) Now back for An Education and then District 9!

Elisha knew a great spot for a little craving.

Curry chicken sandwich. Mmmmmmm soooooooo gooooooooood!!!!

Crab feast at PPQ, Outer Richmond, SF.

Egg rolls and a very yummy salad. I really, really liked this salad--it had nice textures a nice, light flavor.

Yummy, yummy, garlic nooooooodles!

Ahh! So much delicious crab. This was actually a great deal. We had 13 people (I think) and we ordered four of the couple menus. The drunken crab was the only one I didn't enjoy. It was more than enough food though and came out to about $25/each with tax and tip, which is fabulous for a crab feast!

Birthday dinner at The Slanted Door, Embarcadero, SF.

Slanted Door spring rolls with shrimp, pork, mint and peanut sauce.

These were okay, I like making my own spring rolls so I can stuff them with more mint and cilantro, thus making them more flavorful.

Oysters and sausage.

This isn't on their online menu so it must be fairly new. It was DELICIOUS. I love love love oysters, and the sausage was wonderful, too.

grapefruit and jicama with red cabbage, pickled carrots and candied pecans.

This too was, DELICIOUS!! It was crisp and refreshing and tasted like a light Korean salad so there was definitely some nostalgia there, too. :)

Niman Ranch shaking beef cubed filet mignon, Sausalito Springs' watercress, red onions and lime dipping sauce.

Shaking beef!! Ahhh! Haha. This is on the 7x7 list that P and I are going through. It's the same as a Vietnamese dish P had back in Texas and has been trying to find up here. He said it's the best and closest to that dish that he's tried. I thought it was quite tasty, as well. :)

Beignets with cinnamon cream sauce.

This isn't on the online menu as well. They were crispy and doughy and light. Yummy, but not something I'd crave.

P and I had been trying to go to The Slanted Door for some time now. We decided to book early and go for my birthday and it was perfect. The whole meal was incredible and I want to go back and try more! :) Space wise, the restaurant was a bit too crammed for my liking, but the service was great and I'm so glad the food lived up to the praises--yay!

Baguette Express, Tenderloin, SF.

Grilled Pork Vietnamese style sandwich.

After all of that chocolate, this totally hit the spot.

Baguette Express, Tenderloin, SF.

Not the best spring rolls.

Yummy BBQ chicken Veitnamese style sandwich.
